First group of American POWs arrives in the Philippines
United Press International reports the first 116 American POWs freed from Hanoi were flown to Clark Air Base in the Philippines in three medical flights. A civilian in South Vietnam also arrived in Saigon for hospitalization. Navy Captain Jeremiah A. Denton led the emotional arrival, praising America as the first group begins the long trek home. Preliminary medical checks found no urgent needs.

A weekend storm pushed the season rainfall to 16 inches in Lompoc as heavy showers lashed the Southland. A Santa Barbara man, Jose Luis Ontaveros, 31, died on Highway 101 when his car ran off an embankment after a sideswipe. No other major incidents were reported.
