Nixon pushes tariff rise to back dollar devaluation
President Nixon urged Congress to grant authority to raise tariffs to shield American markets after a 10 percent dollar devaluation. He said trade legislation should follow the move, arguing current negotiations let foreign rivals lower barriers while the U.S. could not rise. Shultz and Ehrlichman joined the briefing as Mills and Long prepared to handle the bill. Banks and foreign exchanges welcomed the devaluation.

Reagan plan offers pay increase for Californians
Sacramento UPI report says Gov Ronald Reagan may fast track a 20 percent income tax rebate using an $852 million surplus. Assemblyman William Bagley notes $45-$50 million for coastal lands and $15-$20 million to strengthen the Capitol against earthquakes. A February 26 hearing on the bill is requested, aiming to cut withholding tax to raise take home pay. If delayed to October, withholding changes may be minimal. Bagley warns a measure must reach the governor within two months to defer the June 1 sales tax and avoid overwithholding.
