California parochial school to receive state textbooks

La Purisima School in Olive Avenue and J Street, serving 245 students, will obtain free textbooks and limited audio visual materials under a 1971 state law now challenged in court by the California Teachers Association and the ACLU. The suit seeks to halt state distribution to parochial schools, arguing constitutional separation of church and state.

Nixon's peace Cabinet sworn in at White House ceremony

Eight members of President Nixon's so called peace Cabinet were formally sworn in Friday along with 12 undersecretaries and other officials. Chief Justice Burger administered oaths as Nixon praised a bipartisan group representing all regions.

Wife crucified as husband’s vow resumes in Santo Domingo

Marita Tamao a 31 year old wife joined her husband Patrick Tamao in a cross crucifixion at the Jaragua Hotel. She was nailed to the cross while their 7-year-old son Fabricio watched in tears. The husband had been on the cross previously for 16 hours after an infection halted his 20 hour ascent. He planned to endure 72 hours total to promote world peace and love.

Airline fined for failing security checks on senator

The FAA fined Delta Airlines $2,000 for allowing Senator Vance Hartke to board at Indianapolis without screening his person or luggage on January 15. Hartke argued screening violated constitutional arrest limits. Allegheny Airlines faced a separate, ongoing probe with a similar incident.

UPI Protest Over Coverage Limits on POW Return

United Press International announced a protest against tight news coverage restrictions for the return of American prisoners of war from Vietnam. President Roderick Beaton sent telegrams and a letter to Defense Secretary Elliot Richardson demanding access and confirmation of coverage at the new Southeast Asia headquarters in Thailand.

Task force ready to clear harbors

The Pentagon said a 48 helicopter Navy and Marine Corps task force and 20 to 25 ships await approval from U.S. and North Vietnamese officials to begin clearing mines in North Vietnam rivers and harbors. Four minesweepers are on station off the coast. others at Subic Bay. A meeting between the Four Party Joint Military Commission or direct diplomacy will determine the form of the talks. The force will also drag mine clearing sleds with helicopters.

Pilot uses nosedive to end inflight brawl over Siberia

A Soviet airline pilot forced his jet into a dizzying nosedive to break up a fight among three wine drinkers who harassed women and struck a passenger over Western Siberia. After ordering passengers to fasten belts, the plane dove then climbed. the three assailants were detained when the aircraft landed at Ovokuznetsk.
