California political reform act ends lobbyist perks

California’s Political Reform Act takes effect January 7 ending lavish lobbyist entertaining in Sacramento. The act caps monthly lobbying spend, bans contributions by lobbyists, requires registration and reporting, and restricts deception aimed at officials. It also broadens campaign limits and tightens conflict of interest rules amid constitutional challenges.

Assembly overpaid for furniture buy at Sacramento

The Sacramento Union reports the Assembly buys almost all its office furniture from E F Corbin Co without bids, paying 50 to 100 percent more than the state General Services Department for identical items. It cites a five drawer file cabinet bought for 411.11 vs 271.20 through competitive bidding and notes a San Francisco dealer offering about 362. The Assembly defends flexibility and lack of formal bidding.

Brando to Gift Land Back to Indians Amid Protest

Marlon Brando plans to donate 40 acres in northwestern Los Angeles County to Survival of American Indians and return his Los Angeles home and an Anaheim apartment building to tribal ownership. His sister Mrs Richard Loving of Mundelein Illinois opposes the move stating the land will not be given away. Brando has long championed Indian causes since declining his 1973 Oscar.

Snow and fog grip wide regions as storm wanes
