Welsh Wins Record Fourth Annual Christmas Chess Tournament

Lompoc High student Calvin Welsh remained undefeated to capture the high school title, ending Cabrillo High School’s run since 1970. Terry Brocksmith also competed in the final round as the trophy stayed at Lompoc. Rajan Ayyar won the junior high perpetual trophy for a second time, a first in four years.

Toll rises in holiday traffic deaths during 102-hour period

The Christmas holiday traffic death toll climbs on the third day of the 102-hour stretch. The National Safety Council projects 550 to 650 deaths from Friday 6 p.m. to Tuesday midnight despite gasoline shortages. UPI tallies 312 deaths by 11 a.m. today.

Heavy winter storm blankets southern Plains and Great Lakes

A major winter storm coated the southern Plains and Upper Great Lakes with snow and freezing rain. Nebraska, Kansas, Iowa, Missouri, central Illinois and parts of Indiana faced dangerous travel conditions with advisories and wind driven drifts. Denver area saw immobilization as 10 foot drifts and closed highways and Stapleton Airport runways halted operations.

Eldon Howerton dies. services pending in Ukiah

Eldon Bill Howerton 68 of Upper Lake died last night. Born 1905 in Santa Maria he worked in cement and plastering in Lompoc. He was a member of First Baptist Church and is survived by widow Lucretia Billie Howerton of Upper Lake, five sons Harvey Lester Gene Vernon and David, ten grandchildren and one great grandchild. Interment planned in Upper Lake California.
