Combined federal drive total tops $49 thousand in 1969

Final report by Col. R. J. Coggin shows Vandenberg civil and military personnel contributed $49,014.75 to the Combined Federal Campaign, with $2,926 from the Lompoc Federal Institution and NASA. 56 percent supports United Fund of Northern Santa Barbara County, 12.1 percent to welfare groups, 31.4 percent to National Health agencies.

Christmas Eve Snow Strands Midwest as Storm Rages

A winter storm piled heavy snow from the Midwest to the Ohio Valley on Christmas Eve, triggering accidents and travel chaos. Chicago faced 11 inches and O’Hare delays with runway closures while other cities reported multiple deaths from shoveling and crashes. A second system lashed the Northwest, with warnings across the East and South. Temperatures turned warm in the South with Brownsville hitting 81.

Nixon grants post offices day after Christmas off

Washington UPI reports President Nixon declares a post Christmas day off for all government employees. No regular postal delivery or service Friday will occur though special delivery and mail collection will be provided.

Pilot ejected before Miramar jet crash destroys hangar

A Navy F8 Crusader plowed into the Miramar hangar at 225 mph, killing 11 and injuring 12. Lt Cyrus M. Riddel, 27, ejected and was ordered not to discuss the case while investigators review the incident. The crash damaged three other jets and destroyed five F4 Phantoms with about 25 million dollars in damage.

Cranston seeks immediate oil drilling moratorium off Santa Barbara

Senator Alan Cranston of California demands an immediate moratorium on oil drilling in the Santa Barbara Channel. He wrote Interior Secretary Walter Hickel blaming unwarranted haste misguided policies and inadequate planning for a new oil slick in the channel.

Safety Council in Yuletide prediction

The National Safety Council projects 800 to 920 highway deaths during the Christmas holiday period and 35 000 to 40 000 serious injuries over the four days from 6 p m today to midnight Sunday. Council President Howard Pyle urges no drinking and if drinking to allow at least one hour or a 12 ounce beer between drinks.

McDonnell Douglas lands $8 billion F15 contract

The Air Force picked McDonnell Douglas of St. Louis to build the F15 jet fighter in a contract that may total eight billion dollars over five to seven years. Initial development and testing funding totals eighty million dollars, with production planned at up to seven hundred jets, largely built in St. Louis and offset by subcontracting to California and other states.

Names of 132 U.S. POWs released by peace group members

Black Panther Aide Hilliard Sentenced for Loaded Gun

Berkeley UPI reports Black Panther Chief of Staff David Hilliard received six months in prison and a $500 fine for carrying a loaded gun in a public place after a jury found him guilty on that charge. A second charge of carrying a concealed weapon reached a deadlock. A new trial date was set for January 5 on the concealed weapon charge. Hilliard was released on $1,000 bail pending appeal.

California reaches 20 million population mark says expert

Sacramento. Population expert Nels Rasmussen of the state Department of Finance says California passed 20 million residents around Dec 24 based on net migration and natural increase. He notes the exact 20 millionth person is unknown until the June census.

Manson declines to trust lawyers in self defense bid

Charles Manson 35, accused of seven murders, met with court appointed attorney Joseph Ball in County Jail. Ball said he advised Manson on self representation while the court noted Ball would only help evaluate the pros and cons of representing himself.
