Nixon cracks down on pollution offenders with federal permits
President Nixon ordered a broad crackdown on polluters requiring all industries to secure federal permits to dump wastes into U S waters. Penn Central reports massive losses amid bankruptcy filing
Penn Central Transportation Co. reports more than 252 million dollars in net losses for the first ten months of the year with about 4.66 billion dollars in liabilities. October losses reach 19.18 million dollars, up from 8.09 million last year, while the 12 month liability totals 4.70 billion dollars. The railroad filed for reorganization under the Federal Bankruptcy Act last June 21 and its statement was filed with the U.S. District Court supervising its operations.
