Bethlehem opened Christmas festivities with carols by an Israeli police band and a guarded procession to the Basilica of the Nativity. More than 1,000 Israeli troops sealed off the town to protect thousands of pilgrims arriving by bus and car.
Arab pilgrims and tourists reach Bethlehem under roadblocks on every highway to the Judean Hills town. Latin Patriarch Giacomo Beltritti arrived in Manger Square with Israeli police amid a 1,000-strong crowd, as officials forecast 12,900 worshippers for Christmas Eve and thousands camped in Shepherds Field.
Lompoc area churches including Mission Hills Vandenberg Village host Christmas services tonight and Christmas Day. Midnight masses occur at La Purisima Queen of Angels and 11 pm at First Presbyterian St Mary's Episcopal and First United Methodist. Bethany Lutheran hosts three services Christmas Eve 7 30 pm Nine Lessons and Carols 11 30 pm Holy Communion and Christmas Day 10 am Holy Communion. Peace Lutheran offers 7 30 and 10 45 pm candlelit and youth modern music services. Valley of the Flowers United Church of Christ hosts 7 pm family service with choirs and a pastor led story.
Cesar Chavez was released from Monterey County jail after 20 days for defying a court order to halt a lettuce boycott against Bud Antle. About 400 supporters greeted him, and a Roman Catholic Mass followed. The California Supreme Court ordered release pending appeal, with no hearing date set.
Congressman Charles M. Teague announced that the Air Force will not move the Space and Missile Systems Organization facilities from Los Angeles and San Bernardino to Vandenberg Air Force Base. The decision was attributed to Department of Defense input and cost considerations.
Lompoc’s business and professional community will be quiet as the Valley celebrates Christmas. Postal workers have a long weekend with no mail deliveries Saturday and Sunday. Nearly all stores close while some restaurants stay open for Christmas dinners. The Lompoc Record will not publish tomorrow and resumes Saturday.
The Labor Department reports the consumer price index rose 0.3 percent in November, down from October’s pace. Food prices fell 0.5 percent while costs for services, clothing, shelter, and autos rose. the year over year rise stands at 5.6 percent.
