The County Office of Environmental Quality approves EIRs for a forest academy near West Camino Cielo, a International Meditation Center with 108 living units, a Goleta preschool at Cathedral Oaks Church for 30 children, renewal of Goleta Auto Salvage permit, and a Tepusquet Rd land division splitting 347 acres into four parcels of 80 87 80 and 100 acres.

Solvang Group in Tournament Draws Local Chess Fans

Young players from Santa Ynez and Solvang join Lompoc participants for the Record’s fourth annual all school Christmas Chess Tournament. About 200 youngsters expected at 9 a.m. in the Veterans Memorial Building with seven Solvang Elementary seventh graders newly confirmed. Registration opens at 8 a.m. and entries include visitors from Vandenberg Air Force Base.

Cost of living up 0.7 percent in November

Government data show fuel electricity and food costs rising sharply in November pushing the cost of living 0.7 percent higher. The report notes reduced purchasing power for the average weekly paycheck by 0.6 percent amid worsening fuel shortages described by the Labor Department.

Burglars Hit Lompoc Recreation Department

Police say burglars forced entry at 105 South C St and stole an empty cash drawer from the front counter. They left the ovens on, heating the room to a level described as hot enough to cook next Tuesday’s Christmas dinner.

Teen page delayed for holidays with court notices

Eugene Ferguson, 21, of Base, pleaded guilty to marijuana possession and faces a probation hearing and sentencing January 23 in Lompoc Justice Court after narcotics raids. James Lucero, 18, of North Sixth Street, faced forgery charges for cashing two Series E bonds. A burglar stole 400 dollars cash and items from David Lemos at 217 West Walnut Avenue, total loss 724 dollars.

Mary Lou Spence Dies at 36 in Lompoc

Graveside services will be held Saturday at 10 a.m. at Lompoc Evergreen Cemetery for Mary Lou Spence 36 who died Thursday at Lompoc District Hospital. Officiating will be Rev Don Shutt. She was born in 1937 in Louisiana and lived in Lompoc 13 years. She is survived by two sons Michael and Kenneth and two daughters Brenda and Barbara Ann all of Lompoc. Her parents Mr and Mrs Ernest Eubanks of Texas and a grandmother Mrs Eula Williams of Louisiana. Two brothers Delson Eubanks of Texas and Kenneth Eubanks of Ohio and one sister Mrs Joyce Kloak of Oregon. Friends may call at McPeek Family Mortuary this evening 4 to 8.

Storm drives east as deadly winter storm lingers

Travelers faced advisories across the Appalachians into Kentucky Indiana and Alabama as snow and freezing rain spread from a Midwest-origin storm. The system battered the eastern Midwest with record snows killed at least 23 this week, with 46 deaths total. cold, ice and snow extended into Pennsylvania New York and West Virginia and into the Gulf Coast region.

Boy Hurt in Fall From Bicycle in Vandenberg Village

A 12 year old Vandenberg Village boy Craig Carter suffered serious head and facial injuries after his bicycle front fork collapsed on Terra Way. He flew over the handlebars and landed on pavement, being rushed by sheriff deputies and rescue ambulances to Marian Hospital after an initial stop at Lompoc Hospital. He was listed in fair condition the next day.
