Strikers Ignore Court Order Paralyze Detroit Supermarkets

Truck drivers warehousemen and dock workers struck despite a federal injunction. Picket lines halted deliveries to about 400 supermarkets serving 4.75 million people, as federal mediators prepared to broker talks. Local 337 members gathered at Allied Supermarket complex in Livonia with other pickets at several warehouses. Store managers had stockpiled supplies in anticipation of shortages during the holiday period.

Burglars Hit Four Homes Over Weekend In Santa Maria Area

Burglars struck four homes in scattered weekend locations, taking cash, cameras, stereo gear, alcohol, and Christmas gifts. Notable losses include Thomas O Moulds 278 Vega Ave Vandenberg Village 676 total with 125 cash and a 9 mm pistol and James Douglas Finley 617 N Lilac Ave Lompoc 600 with two cameras and liquor. Halsey 4115 Sirius Ave Vandenberg lost 15 cash. Maxine Watkins 259 Antares Ave saw unknown items.

Lompoc Officials Hold Meeting and Narcotics Arrests

The Lompoc Beautification Commission meets at 7 30 p m in city hall chambers. Police report two more narcotics raids yielded arrests Robert Winkle 21 and Julian Boyd 19 on marijuana and dangerous drugs charges with bail set today. A dryer fire at Elsey's Wash and Dry on West Ocean Avenue caused $50 in clothing loss. cause undetermined.

County Taxpayers Group Opposes 69 Percent Board Pay Rise

The Santa Barbara County Taxpayers Association released a statement criticizing the proposed 69 percent salary increase for the County Board. It says a moderate raise is acceptable but the 24 000 increase approved by the Board of Supervisors on December 3 is not appropriate or necessary at this time. The release follows a recent board of directors meeting.

Court to rule on insurance issue

The Supreme Court agreed to decide if California violates the constitution by excluding normal pregnancy from state employee disability insurance. The 14th Amendment equal protection question arises from a 1973 San Francisco panel ruling. The plan, proposed in 1946, covers many disabilities but excludes pregnancy. Benefits range from 25 to 105 dollars weekly for up to 26 weeks.

Spare gas cans blamed for destroying car

CHP reports a fatal chain of crashes after ruptured spare gas cans burst into flames. Larry Klinefelter, 35, died when his car hit a utility pole near Carpinteria. Dennis Smith, 23, died from December injuries. Pedro Rodriguez, 33, and passengers Herbert Flores, 22, and John Martinez, 23, were treated and released. A 13-year-old boy was knocked unconscious but had minor injuries from a bicycle fall nearby.
