Reading gains for 7th graders at Franklin Junior High
In February 1970 the 160 pupil class read four years three months. By May 1972 they averaged eight years four months, near national levels. The Benjamin Franklin program used extended reading time, flexible methods, and neighborhood aides to build confidence and interest in reading. The project director Marilyn Jones notes no single method explains the success.
