Former President Harry S Truman, 88, slipped into a very serious state at Research Hospital. Doctors reported weak heart and fluid in the lungs with kidney blockage while stating he is not yet critical and remains fairly stable.
Lompoc officials learned the Health Facility Committee of the State Health Planning Council recommended denying the district’s variance to build a 74 bed convalescent hospital and expand Hickory Avenue facilities. Kenneth Wicks called the decision crushing but pledged a campaign to overturn it before the full council on Jan 19. Voters had approved a $1.5 million bond in June for the project, with delays risking higher costs and inflation. Wicks urged supporters to lobby lawmakers as the master tri county plan nears completion but may come too late to help.
Mostly fair conditions persist through Friday with morning fog and increasing high clouds. Today’s highs reach the mid 50s to low 60s, Friday warms to the upper 50s to upper 60s, light southerly wind 10 to 15 mph. Tides: high 5.4 feet at 5 17 a.m. and 3.3 feet at 6 20 p.m. Low 0.8 feet at 12 27 p.m.
Commander Eugene Cernan and scientist Harrison Schmitt conclude the last U S manned lunar mission of the 20th century after three surface excursions totaling 22 hours 5 minutes. They leave Taurus Littrow Valley with 275 pounds of lunar rocks and map the moon from orbit before returning to Earth.
County observer notes Second District Supervisor Charles F. Catterlin named to the board two years ago is seen as a leading contender for the Santa Barbara Municipal Court vacancy to be filled Jan. 7 by Gov. Ronald Reagan. The possible appointment would trigger a governor’s selection for Catterlin’s supervisor seat.
The White House refused to back South Vietnamese President Thieu's proposed temporary Christmas cease fire. Press secretary Ronald L. Ziegler said the United States would align with only a single truce plan. A Paris report that the U S asked Viet Cong and North Vietnam to accept Thieu's idea was dismissed as inaccurate.
UPI dispatch from Paris reports deputy U.S. negotiator Isham urging acceptance of Thieu's Christmas truce proposal while Hanoi and the Viet Cong demand the United States sign the original cease-fire draft. Kissinger conferred with Nixon as new snags emerged in Paris and Tho prepared to return to Hanoi.
