At Hawaii Dreamland in Yamagata Japan a privately run zoo killed ten large animals including two lions a tiger a leopard a bear a kangaroo a zebra a springbok and two condors to reduce monthly feeding expenses officials cited insolvency and failed sell attempts the killings were carried out by a taxidermist over about an hour and drew local protest from animal groups.

Congress approves Alaska land and payment settlement
The Senate approved a compromise bill granting Alaska Natives 962.5 million dollars and 40 million acres of land. The House passed it 307 to 60, sending the measure to President Nixon for signature. It settles 1867 land claims dating to Alaska’s purchase from Russia. In Anchorage, AFN executive director Harry Carter called the bill a dream come true.

Vietnamese forces push into Chup plantation in Cambodia
South Vietnamese armored units entered the Chup rubber plantation in eastern Cambodia and allied observers reported at least one battalion from the North Vietnamese 9th Infantry Division north of the plantation. The 7th and 9th divisions were thought to have taken shelter in the 100 square mile area, inactive due to fighting. A battalion of 9th division troops was seen across the Mekong River north of the plantation. A twin engine U.S. plane with Americans and Vietnamese aboard disappeared.

Reinecke Acts to Organize State Remap Panel
