Santa Ynez Valley High Band Wins Parade Sweepstakes
The Santa Ynez Valley High School Pirate marching band directed by Dan Neece won sweepstakes at the Solvang Christmas parade. The 50 member band wore black white and orange uniforms and played Sleigh Ride under a sunny December sky. Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints Solvang took front division honors with I Heard the Bells on Christmas Day. Santa Maria High School was runner up in the band division.

Solvang District to Adopt Conflict of Interest Code
The Solvang Elementary School District board meets tonight at 8 p.m. at Laurel Street School to adopt a conflict of interest code by the Jan. 31 deadline. Deputy county counsel Don H. Vickers says the date applies to all county districts except those crossing county lines. The meeting also covers the March 8 trustee election, incumbents’ terms expiring next year, and the filing window through Dec. 30. An executive session at 7:30 will review the paper screening committee for the retiring District Sept. Ralph Edwards. applications due by Dec. 17.

SMID Disappointed Over River Crossing Funding Decision
A State Water Resources hearing officer recommended denial of state funds for a joint Solvang Municipal Improvement District and Santa Ynez Community Services District river crossing project. SMID directors at Thursday night’s meeting called the decision an uphill battle and warned it could derail a joint powers agreement. The cost was pegged around 500000 dollars, beyond SMID’s means, with a Sacramento hearing set for December 16. The districts considered presenting a joint response and noted the need for an official Solvang seal.
