Unemployed Vietnam veterans face hardship and aid gaps
A National view shows 200,000 Viet vets jobless with unemployment up to 13 percent in some areas and 6.5 percent nationwide for ages 20 to 29. Veterans Affairs runs 70 centers aiding 50,000 to 80,000 monthly, but many, especially young, Black or Puerto Rican veterans, face long odds obtaining work. Rosario Antonio, a Puerto Rican immigrant, illustrates the struggle as his family relies on welfare while he searches for a job in New York City.
