Searchers returned to the Sespe Hot Springs area in Ventura County in force but found nothing. A day long search proved fruitless and authorities planned a morning meeting to decide whether to continue. Hughes was last seen in the rugged canyons near the hot springs along a 12 mile region.
Lt. Gov. Ed Reinecke urged a united effort by state officials and local groups to bring NASA’s space shuttle program to California and Vandenberg. He said politicians in Washington are backing the plan and urged creation of a state-wide advisory body. A 23 year old Lompoc woman Beckie Ruth Hayes died in a crash at Union Sugar Avenue and Highway 246. Her husband Danny Hayes was injured and taken to Lompoc Hospital along with four others in a second crash a mile away. CHP and sheriff deputies investigated.
The Senate Finance Committee agreed to raise Social Security taxes by 2.5 billion dollars next year with larger sums in following years to fund a major benefits expansion. The panel sent a catchall bill to the Senate including trade curbs, welfare reform, and a new government health program for catastrophic medical expenses.
