Johnson denies paper editorial on sheriff training costs

County Administrative Officer Raymond D. Johnson rebutted a Santa Barbara newspaper editorial that accused county supervisors of being penny wise and pound foolish for not sending two Sheriff's Department officers to a riot control course in Augusta. He defended the county’s Nov. 30 decision to send one officer and released a statement detailing more than 10,500 spent in five months of the 1970 71 fiscal year on riot control and related training for sheriff personnel. The Augusta courses require 289 plane fare per attendee, Johnson noted, and he warned the editorial misrepresented available training.
