Ohio Turnpike protests lead to arrests of eight truckers

State police in Ohio arrested eight truck drivers who had blocked highways overnight while National Guard troops towed away their tractor trailers. More than a thousand independent truckers remained parked on the Ohio Turnpike and two other major roads, blocking traffic. Police cited safety concerns as the cause of the predawn actions amid national protests over diesel prices and speed limits.

Pioneer 10 speeds past Jupiter

Pioneer 10 sped two million miles from Jupiter as it exited the Jupiter encounter. NASA reported instrument trouble in the radiation belt and a momentary data loss from a mission-control button mishap. The craft traveled 28 000 mph relative to Jupiter and 58 000 mph relative to the sun as it heads toward outer planets.

Santa Barbara planners seek guidance on new conflict law

The County Planning Commission asked county counsel for an interpretation of the Moscone Governmental Conflict of Interests Act signed by Gov. Reagan. The law requires disclosure of property holdings and income that could create conflicts for land use decisions and could carry felony liability for noncompliance.

Developer wins year extension for Goleta Valley project

The County Planning Commission granted Midtown Development Co. a one-year delay for the 180-lot Goleta Valley residential project at Glen Annie and Cathedral Oaks Roads. Approval hinges on a full environmental report addressing a worsening local water supply and includes Artesia Water Co. seeking to use a former large agricultural well for bottled water on a new Goleta Valley site.

Reinecke blasts coastal ruling on San Onofre units

California Lt. Gov. Ed Reinecke denounced the Coastal Commission’s 6 to 5 decision to deny the San Onofre expansion as tragic and irresponsible. Edison and SDG&E warned the delay could affect energy independence by 1980. The ruling preserves bluffs and marine habitat while delaying two 1,140 megawatt units.
