Federal Panthers probe hit by subpoenas and lost records

A UPI report from San Francisco says a Federal Grand Jury investigating the Black Panther party faced obstacles in subpoenaing Huey Newton and Eldridge Cleaver defense fund records. Melvin Newton's appearance was postponed to quash the subpoena, while Cleaver fund records were deemed lost or misplaced amid Ramparts Magazine involvement.

Leukemia cure may be near from marine extracts

Dr. Michael M. Sigel of the University of Miami Medical School reports that extracts from 20 tropical marine organisms extended survival in leukemia mice. In one test half of the mice given ecteinascidia turbinate extracts were cured. researchers caution this is preliminary and not a confirmed cancer cure.

Embarrassing bank break causes police help plea

Wilfred Peet pleaded guilty to trespassing with intent to steal after getting locked inside a bank he broke into when another man locked him in. He told the court the incident followed torrential rain.

Heavy rain sweeps Texas gulf coast and beyond

United Press International reports heavy rain along the Texas Gulf Coast with thunderstorms northward into the Southern Rockies. Galveston records almost four inches in 24 hours while San Antonio reports about 1.5 inches. A waterspout was seen on Lake Pontchartrain in New Orleans and a funnel cloud near Lubbock. 54 mph winds hit Valdosta as heat returns to the Plains and record lows were noted in New England.

Woman Held for Anonymous Vietnam War Calls

The bereaved mother of a Vietnam serviceman would receive anonymous calls asking why her son was there. Police link the acts to Anne Seltzer, 26, who faced six misdemeanor counts of annoying calls and two for falsely dispatching emergency equipment. Detectives say she made over 100 calls to families of soldiers killed in action. Her husband was surprised by the charges.

Special session chance small for bill change

Governor Reagan is unlikely to call a special session to fix a 2.8 million error in a business inventory tax bill. Assemblyman Z'berg warns counties face large losses, while Bagley of the Revenue and Taxation Committee says losses would be minor and can be corrected in the January 1970 session.

Litter to Fill 670 Miles of Baskets Over Labor Day

Keep America Beautiful foresees Americans will discard enough trash over Labor Day weekend to fill about two million standard municipal litter baskets, stretching from Boston to Detroit. The group urged travelers to carry litter bags in cars and boats and keep the streets clean.

Labor Day traffic fatalities projected by National Safety Council

The National Safety Council estimates 625 to 725 Americans may die in Labor Day weekend traffic crashes. Council president Howard Pyle urged defensive driving, noting about 500 deaths occur in a typical nonholiday period, as Americans will drive 300 million more miles than usual. The existing records are 688 in 1968 Labor Day and 732 in 1967 for the July 4th holiday.

Desegregation clashes flare in Louisiana schools

In New Iberia and nearby parishes, racial demonstrations erupted as 300 Black students demanded reassignment to all Negro schools. Police used tear gas to break up the riot, seven Black youths were arrested, and several parishes see mass withdrawals as desegregation efforts under federal orders proceed amid boycotts and fears of violence.

Youthful bandit robs dry cleaner. leaves with cash but may lose profit

In Salt Lake City a young robber entered a dry cleaning shop and took $40. After the raid he discarded a $70 revolver, suggesting the burglary may have cost him more than it gained.
