Long hearings planned for 158 tax protest petitions

County Board of Equalization will hear 158 property tax protest petitions filed this year. Debating a schedule, Deputy County Clerk Howard Menzel eyed a start around September 10 with roughly one full day per week for hearings. Most petitions stem from higher assessments, notably in Lompoc Valley, prompting study of a possible tax moratorium.

Military diplomats diverge on Vietnam progress

After two days of talks in Washington the State and Defense Departments agree the enemy strength in South Vietnam has diminished this year though they differ on significance. Construction Workers Rally At City Hall In Pittsburgh

About 4 000 white construction workers marched on City Hall in Pittsburgh to protest a building shutdown said to be engineered by black civil rights groups. Police reported orderly side­walk processions with more workers expected and traffic remained controlled.

Dunlap Files to Contest Santa Ynez River Board Seat

Lompoc attorney Gary Dunlap filed nomination papers to run for a seat on the Santa Ynez River Water Conservation District board. Three seats will be contested in the November 4 election, with Division 1 currently held by Richard Henning, Division 4 by William Laranjo, and Division 5 by Andrew Petersen. Sept. 15 is the filing deadline.

Pioneer Society Reunion Festivities Begin Tonight

The Lompoc Pioneer Society marks its 43rd annual reunion under President Virgil Phelps with festivities this week. Dr. Ernest Carter, UC Santa Barbara faculty member and former Santa Rita School student, will headline the fifth annual Lompoc Valley Historical Society dinner. Carter, nicknamed Nick, will speak on From Santa Rita to the Olympics, recounting his early life from Santa Rita to academic achievement.

Kennedy appeal sought in Kopechne inquest ruling

Lawyers for Sen. Edward M. Kennedy and other witnesses weigh appeals to the U S District Court or Massachusetts Superior Court over a ruling allowing counsel for self incrimination and privilege issues only at the Kopechne inquest. Mary Jo Kopechne died July 18 when Kennedy’s car left a Chappaquiddick bridge.

North county transportation study expansion urged

A meeting in Lompoc called for broadening a south coast study to a countywide flow analysis including Lompoc and north county. A next meeting in Solvang set for Thursday at 1 p.m. Officials aim to qualify for HUD funds and present a report to the Area Planning Council, with completion likely in two to four years.
