Three held in cocaine smuggling operation

DEA reports the arrest of Ronald H. Ossenberg, Robert L. Foulkes, and John P. Foulkes of O'Brien Manufacturing in Seattle for smuggling cocaine inside hollow water ski cores. Ossenberg’s wife Carol and Gord on Jacopi of Burlingame were also detained. about 10 pounds of cocaine seized.

Lindbergh flew antique open cockpit planes a year before death

Lindbergh, in his 70s, piloted open cockpit aircraft including a Gypsy Moth from Santa Paula airport. Harlan Gurney recalls they barnstormed in the 1920s and that Lindbergh spoke with him recently by phone, noting their shared Lincoln Nebraska beginnings and Paige's Aerial Pageant ventures.

Reagan rated relatively good governor by California poll

A California Poll found 35 percent said Ronald Reagan did a good job as governor, 36 percent fair, and 24 percent poor. Reagan peaked in February 1969 with 42 percent good and August 1971 with 28 percent good and 33 percent poor. Nixon and Brown fared worse in various years.

Worker buried alive wins large settlement in California

Clarence E. Johnson Jr., a 38 year old Ojai father of four, was buried 25 minutes in a trench cave in San Luis Obispo after which he remained unconscious for two years. He now receives an estimated 3 million dollar settlement for his injuries and ongoing care.

Scali to Remain U.N. Ambassador as Ford Keeps Post

President Ford plans to keep John Scali as U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations. A high official source denied a San Francisco Examiner report that former Senator Thomas Kuchel would replace Scali. Scali will stay in his post and Kuchel may be named a public member of the U.S. delegation for the General Assembly next month.

Charles A Lindbergh died in Hawaii at 72 after returning from New York. His physician said the aviator chose a quiet end, declined heroic measures, and arranged his funeral details while his cancer limited his strength. He preferred living a day here to a month in New York.

Young GOP seeks to oust Rockefeller from 1976 ticket

In Los Angeles the Young Americans for Freedom announce a campaign to dump Nelson Rockefeller from the GOP ticket in 1976. They warn of a conservative third party if Rockefeller remains and call for letter writing to party leaders and President Ford. John Lewis accuses Rockefeller of fiscal irresponsibility and a liberal record while unpopular with many Republicans.

Missouri Couple Sentenced in Hearst Kidnap Extortion Case

Shirley Ann Marx, 21, and Nile Dayne Marx, 43, of Columbia Missouri, received nine months in county jail and three years probation for attempting to extort 100000 from Randolph Hearst by posing as kidnappers of Patricia Hearst. Superior Court Judge William A Caldecott imposed the sentence after a guilty verdict on August 2 and taped telephone conversations. The FBI arrested them February 16 when they tried to collect the money in a Los Angeles bus depot locker.

Court to study Ehrlichman right

California Supreme Court will likely decide Wednesday whether to suspend John Ehrlichman from practicing law over his Elisberg burglary conviction. A record marked moral turpitude was filed by the state bar association, potentially yielding suspension pending appeals. disbarment if Ehrlichman loses.

Ford recall may cut fuel economy on older cars

Ford will repair 282000 1973 and early 1974 models to fix a defective EGR valve. The fix can reduce fuel economy by up to 3 percent. Chrysler GM and VW recalls are also underway with varying completion rates and EPA oversight.

Spirit of St. Louis: spare, lean design at Smithsonian

The Spirit of St. Louis built by Ryan Aircraft Co in San Diego cost 6000 dollars for the airframe with extra engine and instruments. Lindbergh flew it with blind cockpit and side windows only, no windshield, carrying 450 gallons of fuel. It now hangs from the Smithsonian ceiling.

Non high school graduates win right to go to college

Two sixteen year olds win access to Santa Rosa Junior College after a U S District Court ruling. Judge Alfonso Zirpoli said age alone cannot bar admission and that standards must evaluate individual academic proficiency.
