August Agony sports car rally to run Sunday

An August Agony sports car rally is set for Sunday August 31 starting from the Williams Brothers Shopping Center West Ocean Avenue. Registration opens 11 15 a m with the first car at noon. destination remains secret, ending in the Santa Maria area. Rally masters are Greg Demling and Terri Douglass contact 866 7888.

Cal Coaches Tout Gerry Borgia as Key Pacific Coast Guard

California football coaches project Gerry Borgia as one of the Pacific Coast’s top guards this season. The Lompoc product rose from unheralded recruit to a starting guard, sharing time with Dan Ryan before gaining the lead last year. Cal praises its rebuilt line led by Borgia with two sophomores backing him and spring standout Greg Hendren. The Bears open practice August 29 with a home game against Texas on September 20.

Shaw wins AVCO Classic in scramble finish at Sutton

Tom Shaw, 26, scrambled to a five over par 77 final round and a 72 hole total of 280 to win the AVCO Classic and a $30,000 prize. Bob Stanton of Sydney, Australia, shot 71 for 281 and $17,100 as runner up. Gary Player tied for 58th with $214.29 as the field faded. Shaw heads to Port Judith exhibition with Joe Carr then the Greater Hartford Open next weekend.

Taipei wins Little League World Series in Williamsport

Taipei Republic of China defeated Santa Clara California to win the 23rd annual Little League World Series in Williamsport before 25 000 fans. Chinese pitcher Tsu-yen Chen held Santa Clara to three hits as Taipei followed manager instructions, capitalizing on errors and a passed ball and a wild pitch in key innings.

Phillies reject ex manager Skinner charges over resignation
