Firefighters gain control of major Southland blazes
Firefighters gained control today of two large brush fires in Riverside and San Diego counties as a third blaze showed progress toward containment. The Walker Basin fire burned about 18 500 acres, the Moosa Canyon fire 6 274 acres, and the San Mateo Canyon fire 16 800 acres on Camp Pendleton and nearby forest. About 650 residents were evacuated. crews began releasing personnel and equipment as lines held and weather aided suppression.
