Lompoc Council Sets 1973-74 Tax Rate At $1.68 Per $100

Lompoc City Council approved a 1973-74 tax rate of $1.68 per $100 of assessed valuation on a $2.1 million budget. The rate allocates $1 to general fund $0.50 to retirement and $0.18 to the library. Council postponed several items and approved water mains upgrades costing about $27,000 above budget.

Tax Appeals Rush Ahead as Deadline Nears in County

Howard C. Menzel says a late surge of tax appeal applications is expected before 5 p.m. August 27 to the County Board of Equalization for the 1973 74 fiscal year. The board will begin hearings in September, spanning several months. Over 185 applications have been filed, with many from Goleta Valley and Santa Ynez Valley seeking assessment reductions due to local moratoriums and building permit delays.

Man to surrender to agents in New Mexico

Edwin Michael Gaudet Jr., 30, a former New Orleans policeman, agreed to surrender to Secret Service agents in Taos County New Mexico after a manhunt near a commune. His wife and cousin aided in finding him and argued he could not threaten the President while living at the commune.

Senator Goldwater Rescues Boat Victims Off California Coast

UPI reports Senator Barry Goldwater dived from his 60 foot cruiser near Newport Harbor to save a man and a woman after their speedboat was knocked overboard by a wave. The operator Paul Brown and Mr and Mrs Glen Mabhlett of North Hollywood were rescued.

Hurricane Brenda hits Campeche with deadly floods

Hurricane Brenda lashed southeast Mexico with 112 mph winds washing away hundreds of homes in Campeche and Ciudad del Carmen. Two children died in floods and about 2,000 people were left homeless as the storm weakened and moved toward Chiapas. The Greek freighter Yucatan reported taking on water offshore and the crew sought Mexican Navy assistance.
