Nixon shoves Ziegler over motorcade plan anger at precautions

President Nixon, angered by assassination precautions that altered his motorcade, grabbed Press Secretary Ron Ziegler by the lapel in New Orleans and shoved him. He criticized press handling and vented about cancellations before flying to California.

Nixon calls possible assassination claim ridiculous

The Secret Service flagged a potential plot to kill President Nixon in New Orleans, but police discounted the risk for lack of evidence. Edwin Gaudet Jr., a former policeman nicknamed Punchy, was named in a federal warrant after threats allegedly made in a New Orleans drugstore. He was found in a New Mexico hippie commune but fled as agents pursued him.

Tax rate cut may be 25 to 30 cents for 1973-74

County Supervisor chair Francis H. Beattie says a 25 to 30 cent tax rate reduction for the 1973-74 fiscal year appears possible, depending on revised revenue figures from Auditor-Controller Paul Floyd and raises in assessed valuation and interest income. Floyd hopes to supply figures before Aug. 27 with a Sept. 4 recommendation for school and special districts.

Four Lompoc High athletes injured in Ventura crash

Four former Lompoc High School athletes remained seriously injured after a Monday morning crash on Highway 101 near Rincon. Keith Landrum 17 and Howard Lee Harrison 17 were moved to ICU with critical and head injuries, while David Farnum Jr. 18 suffered multiple injuries and remained in serious condition. Dallas Riley 18 was listed in satisfactory condition with a skull fracture. Farnum, the driver, was in a coma but later showed alertness. Families were present at Ventura.

Lompoc Chamber Honors Felices at Farewell Luncheon

The Lompoc Valley Chamber of Commerce held a farewell luncheon at the Lion's Inn to honor Maj. Gen. Salvador E. Felices commander of the 1st Strategic Aerospace Division Vandenberg AFB. Felices and his family depart August 25 for a new post as vice commander of the 16th Air Force in Madrid Spain.

White House may decide on Agnew case final step

UPI reports that U S Attorney Beall said the White House might have the final say on presenting Agnew corruption evidence to a Maryland grand jury. Attorney General Richardson earlier claimed ultimate responsibility for what is shown and could indict the vice president.

Suit Could Trigger Special County Insurance Funding

The county may set aside an insurance sum to cover potential liability from a $7 million libel suit by former pathologist Dr. Lawrence McAlpine against the county and officials including Sheriff John W. Carpenter and District Attorney David D. Milner. The action, filed in Ventura County, accuses libel and related counts. county counsel had not yet received the complaint.
