Lompoc events showcase concerts sales and banquets

The Lompoc area hosts a series of cultural and community events. A guest pianist appears August 24 at 8 p.m. at 427 North H Street. Rummage and bake sales run August 27–28 at St Marys Episcopal Church and August 28 at First United Methodist Church. Senior trips and a Santa Cruz visit are planned, plus a scholarship dance August 31 at the Veterans Memorial Building featuring a Hollister orchestra. The Lompoc Valley Chamber installs leaders September 9 at the Elks Hall with Space Shuttle speakers. California to avoid tax hike during 90 day wage freeze

California will dodge a state tax rise during the 90 day wage price freeze but will face new revenues soon after. Gov Reagan's adviser Verne Orr says the freeze will not measurably affect the treasury and that taxes will likely rise this year to balance the budget or fund schools and civil service pay. Orr notes personal income and sales taxes are the likely targets and sees no probability of a tax increase during the freeze.

Tax loophole lets California insurers dodge state taxes

Sacramento UPI group Project Loophole reports 12 California insurers avoided 11 million in state taxes by deducting local property taxes on their main office buildings. The provision could save up to 18 million this year. Occidental Life Insurance Co. of California cited as the prime example with 1.27 million in credits.

Public funds urged for private schools

The California Constitution Revision Commission urged allowing public funds for private school students in nonsectarian settings and for nonprofit colleges.
