Flood control dropped from Lompoc Narrows Dam plan
The U.S. Bureau of Reclamation says flood control is no longer economically justified in the Lompoc Narrows Dam multi purpose project. Water cost is projected at 160 to 180 dollars per acre foot, higher than earlier estimates. Recreation remains favorable but local cost sharing would rise. City officials met with county supervisors to discuss the latest findings.

A US Navy scuttle team boarded the nerve gas laden Liberty ship SS Le Baron Russell Briggs at 9 33 a m and opened valves by 11 45 a m enabling the 26 year old ship with 418 concrete vaults of deadly gas rockets to sink 16 000 feet to the seabed 282 miles off Cape Kennedy. The Hartley remained on scene to collect water samples and verify the burial while Army chemical experts and six rabbits aboard monitored safety.
