Motorcyclists Leave Lompoc After Weekend Wedding

More than 250 riders from several clubs left Lompoc after a weekend noted by a wedding among their group. Police said guests from Hells Angels and others behaved within restraints, with two teens injured mildly when a bike tipped in the 400 block of West Ocean Avenue.

Angela Davis Faces Manhunt After Birmingham Sighting

Jefferson County Sheriff's Office hunts for Angela Davis, a California fugitive charged with murder and kidnapping after a San Rafael courthouse shootout. Officers pursued tips in Birmingham where informants placed her at a Panther meeting and raids targeted her family and associates. An arrest warrant for unlawful flight was issued. authorities warned she may still be in Alabama.

Soviet Venus 7 rocket launches toward hostile Venus atmosphere

The Soviet Union launched its seventh unmanned mission Venus 7 toward Venus on a four month voyage to study the planet's hot dense atmosphere. Tass said the probe lifted off at 8 38 am Moscow time and began the coast to intercept Venus as it makes a close approach to Earth later this year. The last Soviet planetary probes were Venus 5 and Venus 6 in May 1969 with reports of smooth descents.

Israel protests U.S. doubts over Suez missile buildup

In Jerusalem Foreign Minister Abba Eban decried U S doubts about Israeli charges of an Egyptian missile buildup near the Suez Canal. He said the buildup violates the cease fire and criticized Defense Secretary Laird for saying it is hard to prove or disprove the charges. Eban urged vindication of Israel’s claims.

Nixon trade for ABM reported

Washington based briefing reveals the Nixon administration would scrap the Safeguard ABM system if the Soviet Union agrees to dismantle its antimissile system and curb SS9 ICBM construction. Talks in Vienna wrap and resume November 2 in Helsinki as optimism grows for a broad arms limitation pact.

Lompoc Considers 44 Cent City Tax Increase Tomorrow

The Lompoc City Council will meet at 7:30 p.m. to review a final 1970-71 budget revision proposing a tax rate of 1.68 per 100 assessed value up from 1.24. The council must forward the rate to the county auditor by Sept. 1 and may discuss a $48,000 fire engine replacement, a $3,000 nuclear compaction tester, a $7,200 chamber contract, and a $20,000 industrial development program.

Planning director renamed as community development director in city plan

City Administrator Gene Wahlers seeks a planning director title change to community development director. He will present to City Council tomorrow with an analysis of the planning department and recommend recruitment for the new role, aiming to coordinate grants, industrial development, environmental programs, and city aesthetics. The position would maintain the same salary range as the planning director.

Nerve gas cargo on way to dump aboard the Hartley

The 418 vaults of 67 tons of nerve gas aboard the SS Lebaron Russell Briggs are to be scuttled in 16,000 feet of water off Cape Kennedy aboard the USS Hartley. The ship's burial is set for Tuesday barring weather, after legal orders and court action greenlit the disposal.
