Ellsberg to deny crime at Pentagon papers arraignment

Daniel Ellsberg planned to plead innocent at arraignment on charges of revealing the Vietnam War study. He said he did his duty as a responsible American and would answer to consequences. He is scheduled before U.S. Magistrate Ralph Geffen with a later judge to hear the case.

Poll may shift venue in Corona murder case

San Quentin May Return to Old Fashioned Practices

San Quentin Prison may revert to old fashioned methods if stabbings persist, warns associate warden James Park after three stabbings in a week and a wounded guard case. Guard Robert Laurie, 24, was stabbed Saturday night but survived after grappling with his attacker who escaped. The knife used was strap steel and cells were unlocked for haircuts at the time.

Five arrested after Sunday School church dispute

In Compton police moved to remove Eugene Purnell a 46 year old minister after a shouting match at a Sunday school session. Purnell refused to leave claiming to be a messenger of God leading to five arrests by officers.

Vietnamese troops battle near Nui Ba Ho mountain base

South Vietnamese forces with U.S. air and artillery struck slopes below Nui Ba Ho, nine miles south of the DMZ, where North Vietnamese troops overran a hilltop base. An American adviser and 50 Marines were rescued by helicopter, with 31 Vietnamese Marines killed and 200 Communists reported dead.

Airborne missile launch system tested by SAC

The Strategic Air Command tested the Airborne Launch Control System during a flight from Vandenberg AFB with Lt. Gen. Glen W. Martin aboard an EC-135. The 31st Western Test Range missile launch used ALCS, developed by Boeing, and required two officers to turn launch keys in unison after presidential orders. Gen. Martin served as airborne missile combat crew commander on his first ALCS launch.
