Hickel Office Furnishings Draw GAO Scrutiny

Salinas Valley unions clash over worker representation

In Salinas, Growers and Teamsters declined comment after a 30 minute meeting likely addressing which union will represent farm workers. Chavez United Farm Workers and Teamsters signed a pact giving Chavez jurisdiction over field workers and Teamsters over processing and canneries, leaving bargaining for thousands of field workers undecided. Chavez said three farms refused to rehire workers amid the jurisdiction dispute, while negotiators prepared further talks under Catholic Bishops Committee guidance.

Bill to Change Sessions Stymied in Senate

Funeral practice reform bill dies in Senate

In Sacramento the Senate rejected the funeral practices reform bill 17 to 19 after a sponsor failed to gather sufficient votes due to absences. Sen. Anthony Beilenson said he could win upon next attempt, with the measure requiring directors to list services and inform relatives that caskets or embalming are not state mandated.

Agnew to visit four Asian nations on fact finding trip

Vice President Spiro T. Agnew will conduct a nine day fact finding mission to South Vietnam South Korea Taiwan and Thailand later this month for President Nixon. The White House said Nixon wants first hand impressions of the Nixon doctrine and its effects as the United States gradually disengages from Southeast Asia. Agnew travels August 22 to August 30 without his wife and will meet government leaders in working conferences.
