Nixon vetoes funding bills over deficits and inflation
President Nixon vetoed two major spending bills totaling 22.4 billion dollars citing roughly one billion more deficit spending than he sought. House Democrats planned Thursday votes to override the vetoes on a 4.4 billion school aid bill and an 18 billion package covering federal agencies including Veterans Affairs and HUD. House Republicans and Democrats face November elections as they weigh closer to the president’s inflation concerns.
