Suspect Extradition Begun In California Slayings

Clarence Otis Smith 43 faces extradition proceedings in Brownsville after Mexican authorities handed him to the FBI. Wanted in California for the July 12 campground killings and injuries, Smith was captured in Mexico City and transferred at the Gateway International Bridge. FBI and local warrants accuse him of the Sierra Nevada campground assault. two campers died as witnesses described the attacker as laughing and growling.

Condors Unharmed As Ventura County Fire Near Nesting Site

A Ventura County forest fire burned over 160 acres, half inside the Oak Canyon sanctuary of the Los Padres National Forest, but was halted one mile from California Condor nests. About 250 firefighters controlled the blaze with hopes to extinguish it by Tuesday. biologist Dean Carrier said the birds were not in serious danger.

Homer dies at 51. Homer and Jethro founder Henry Haynes

Henry T. Haynes known as Homer of the Homer and Jethro duo died at 51 after chest pains on the eve of a Great Midwest Fair performance. The Hammond Indiana hospital treated him. Jethro was partner Kenneth Burns. The team began in 1939 at Renfro Valley and produced dozens of albums including The Battle of Kukamonga, with a long career and 50 records.

Mountain climber killed with son after fall on Mt Hood

A 42 year old climber Harry B. Carson died after a fall with his wife Joanne and two sons on Eliot Glacier on Mt Hood. Clifton age 12 died on the mountain while Harry Jr. 13 was injured but surviving. Joanne Carson suffered a broken leg and possible pelvis fracture as the mixed party was airlifted to Hood River area hospitals. Emergency crews from Ft. Lewis evacuated the youths as the Carson family faced a deadly slide high on Oregon’s tallest peak.

Retarded boy found alive in Sierra wilderness

Dana Cooper a 13 year old from Pinole was missing five days in the Sierra mountains near a Truckee campground. He was found barefoot in heavy underbrush about a mile from the camp smiling and responsive to water. He had dehydration exposure and was resting well at Tahoe Forest Hospital.
