Strikers Ask for Welfare Aid Amid Santa Maria Strike

County Welfare Director Arthur W. Nelson told the Board of Supervisors Cesar Chavez promised 300 to 500 welfare applications for families with dependent children as a result of a Santa Maria Valley strike. He said eligibility depends on whether the strike is legally called and requires state agency determination. Supervisor Curtis Tunnell called it a jurisdictional dispute between the farm workers union and the Teamsters, noting farmers complained strikers receive benefits.

County board votes to cut single employables from relief rolls
