Better bumper bill approved

The California Senate Transportation Committee approved a bill requiring 1973 bumpers to withstand a five mile per hour crash without damage. GM opposed the measure and questioned state safety standards while outlining plans for a 1973 bumper designed to manage slow crashes.

Wa-She-Nu Derby Winners and Pacific Goleta Contest Result

Nineteen boys from the Indian Guides held the annual Soap Box Derby at Cypress and Seventh Streets. Trophies were awarded in kindergarten through third grade with Adam Leach and Craig Moore taking top two in kindergarten, Mike Martin and Mark Bush top two in first grade, Cliff Leach and Larry Stockeu top two in second grade, and Jimmy Bock and Mitch Gildea top two in third grade. Adam Leach set the best single heat time at 9.8 seconds, while Leach and Martin posted the fastest combined times. The Wa-She-Nu nation organized the event with several fathers as race officials. Patrick Cole, Lompoc High freshman, won the Goleta Optimist International Zone 13 oratorical contest, advancing to district on May 15 at Catalina and potentially to Minneapolis finals if he wins, coached by Lompoc High's Mike Ryan.

County supervisors hear five Isla Vista redistricting options

Ad hoc County Redistricting Committee presented five Isla Vista zoning ideas to Santa Barbara County supervisors with cautions on district boundaries. Proposals split Isla Vista across Second Third and other districts to target roughly 20 percent population per district while avoiding large changes to Santa Barbara. Leaders debated keeping Santa Maria and Orcutt together, and considered removing Cuyama Valley to balance districts. Sheriff rejects final judgment on $360,000 admin building

Sheriff John W. Carpenter told county supervisors and the Public Safety Authority he will never be satisfied with the proposed $360000 sheriff’s administration building. He cited growth, rising crime and costs, while officials warned ancillary expenses could push totals higher and delay completion to late this year or early next year.

Scruggs funeral held for California CHP officer

Funeral services for Loren D. Scruggs 35 a California Highway Patrol officer who died from a self inflicted gunshot after a fatal confrontation. Four hundred uniformed officers from across the state attended the service.

$250 Million Loan to Save Lockheed Faces Senate Request

Treasury Secretary Connally told a Senate appropriations subcommittee that the government may have to guarantee $250 million in loans to keep Lockheed afloat. He noted about $1.2 billion already invested in the L1011 Tristar Airbus project, jeopardized as Rolls Royce, the engine contractor, entered receivership.
