The Rotary clubs of District 159 including the Tri- Counties gathered for a two day assembly in Santa Maria. About 500 attendees trained newly elected officers set to take office July 1. Speakers included District Governor Richard Harris and Governor-elect William Weideman.

Johns-Manville Records First Quarter 1956 Sales Rise
Johns-Manville reports record first quarter 1956 sales of 64.7 million dollars and total wages of 27.5 million for both men and women. Earnings rose to 4.1 million dollars with 6.3 cents per sales dollar as raw materials costs increased to 24.6 million. Income taxes were 3.2 million versus 2.2 million a year earlier.

Second prize for Janet Godden in Santa Maria junior show
Janet Godden rode chestnut Choyo to second prize at the All-Junior Horse Show in Santa Maria on Sunday. The Santa Maria Riding and Roping Club sponsored the event with four other Lompoc juniors Gary Benson Mary Showers Marion Wygal and Tommy Rudolph competing.

County Tax Group Urges Moderation In Assessments
The Joint Tax Committee of Santa Barbara County Farm Bureau Santa Barbara Branch of the Cattlemen's Association Santa Barbara County Grange and County Chamber of Commerce calls for extreme moderation in tax rates. It warns the State Board of Equalization may push the county assessor to raise land valuations up to 20 percent amid rising government costs and growing welfare exemptions from 1950 to 1955. The appeal, signed by Robert E Esaton Ernc Bone braker and De Donald, urges restraint in fixing district tax rates.
