South H street between Cypress and Locust avenues and parts of South I street are closed this morning as the city begins repaving. Property owners were told the streets will be blocked off for three days, with further closings planned for future work.
Mrs R M White, city librarian for 49 years, will retire in October. Her successor will be Celia Staffanson, a Lompoc elementary faculty member and former part time assistant librarian. The library opened December 9 1907 and moved to Carnegie premises in 1911.
Three Lompocans including incumbent Collier and Johns Manville workers Mitchell and King filed as candidates for the elementary district vacancy created by William Sudden not seeking re election. Collier resigns his current trusteeship. Stillman may join both boards. Officials named for election duties include nine precinct judges across Artesia Honda Maple and citywide districts.

A special Lompoc school board session will hear the faculty salary committee report. The plan keeps first three year salaries steady, then grants increments based on education and experience, from 25 to 600 annually, with targets from 4 000 to 6 425 dollars.
The Lom poc Valley Red Cross drive tops its national quota with $3,200 raised toward a $3,130 goal. A full breakdown of contributing sources will be released later by the local chapter.
Lompoc observes Public Schools Week with visitations across all three schools. Elementary and Hapgood host Tuesday 7 30 to 9 p m open houses with teachers available to discuss matters with parents. Lompoc High School features Thursday program at 7 45 p m with choir music, fashion show, PE and agricultural demonstrations, and refreshments by the Masonic lodge.
Lompoc parents will receive questionnaires to express views on introducing a school swimming program. The survey will decide whether a program is developed or postponed. Scheduling concerns and potential curtailment of other programs were discussed with principals. The municipal pool is available for instructional use.
Leo Jessie Jones a 32 year old section gang worker was a two time loser in Lompoc Justice Court this week but his sentence was suspended. He had pleaded guilty to a peeping Tom charge two weeks earlier and had a $10 fine suspended. On Monday he pleaded guilty to vagrancy and a six month sentence was suspended on condition he avoid liquor. Jones with a long prior record appeared before Judge Arden Jensen substituting for Judge Horace Reed.
The Mayor proclaims April 23 to 27, 1956 as Public Schools Week in Lompoc urging community participation and understanding of California public education. The message frames public education as the state’s first business and calls for support of school standards and local educational needs.
A bi partisan committee to support Chas Teague's bid for Congress was launched at a luncheon. Led by central committeeman Carl Kappler, the group aims to acquaint voters with Teague's Congressional record. Members include Ray Jacobs T M Parks Dr L E Heiges J M Wilson R B McClellan Ellis Elsey H C Rios W F Hobbs Harley Craig R W Chilson George Miller and Carl Kappler. Teague bumper strips will be distributed at Hobbs Elsey and Jack's Shell stations.
George Northman of the Santa Barbara Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation Committee announced 1956 bean support prices by class, with 1955 figures for comparison. Most classes show a small drop from 1955 as base prices decrease while parity remains at 70 percent.
Cong Charles Teague announced in a column that an authorization of 197000 dollars for construction of a new gymnasium at the USDB has been approved. Local authorities had believed the funds were for a chapel at the Army institution.
Harold G. Thompson was elected Lompoc mayor after a council canvass and swearing in of candidates. He succeeds Ray C. Jacobs, who served five years, and will chair the council. Glen Schuyler named mayor pro tem.
After a three week shakedown the Lompoc pool logged 4137 paid admissions as thousands used the facility. The pool closed a week for water heating and filtration adjustments with engineers inspecting the plant. A $175 bid was approved to smooth the shallow end floor and Stan Lawrence was hired as pool engineer to run the mechanical operations.
The Santa Barbara Sectional Future Farmer parliamentary procedure contest will be staged tomorrow night at Grange Hall starting at 7 30. Lompoc Grange sponsors trophies for winning team from Santa Barbara Santa Maria Santa Ynez and Lompoc High schools. The winners advance to the regional contest in King City next Wednesday.
