A humorous meditation on ex journalists who visit the office claiming storied careers. The narrator recalls many unlikely pasts including ex medic, ex farmer, ex actor, ex lawyer, ex prizefighter, ex politician, and other roles, noting how such tales echo in every newsroom doorway.
After a second public hearing the city council sent the controversial zoning ordinance back to the Planning Commission for study and revision. Debates focused on re zoning, off street parking, and church expansion hindrances with church leaders urging exemptions while some council members argued for broader application.
City council and school leaders reached agreement to introduce a school swimming program. Edward Ingram Ray Jacobs and Ted Grant will set an operational pool budget and work with trustees Sudden and Stillman on a financial proposal for city reimbursement of school pool use.
Lompoc property owners who refuse curbs may owe up to 12000 in extra fees if four Improvement Districts are created to force curb installation. The city council paused the plan to inform owners and give them a chance to proceed independently. About 100 properties affected. curbing totals 21000 feet.
The new mayor Harold Thompson completes a city council re organization appointing Finance with Twyford and Thompson, Fire with Schuyler and Jacobs, Light and Water with Jacobs and Twyford, Police with Ingram and Thompson, Recreation and Parks with Ingram and Jacobs, Street Department with Schuyler and Twyford. Schuyler also serves as council representative to the City Planning Commission.
Lompoc city council calls for prompt adoption of a county wide sales tax to protect residents and ensure tax collection from Los Angeles purchasers. A State Board of Equalization ruling backs tax on all deliveries and use within the state, prompting officials to push for early action despite debates over tax allocation.
Veterans are reminded that the filing deadline for real estate and personal property tax exemptions is May 28. First time applicants must present discharge papers at the County Assessor's office 110 North H Street.
The Festival Parade Committee outlines rules for the floral parade tied to Lompoc Flower Festival with the theme Melodies In Flowers. In Lompoc two weeks from the May 18 school board election three candidates vie for the board of trustees to fill a vacancy from William Sudden’s retirement. Harry Collier plans to resign his elementary post to allow Kenneth Stillman to fill it, aiming for both boards to have identical four trustees. King and Mitchell, opponents, work for Johns Manville. Mitchell is an active parent. Current carry-over members are Larsen, McCabe, Huyck, and Stillman. Appointment to the vacancy will be by Hal Caywood the county superintendent.
The General Services Administration refused a city plan to acquire the Lompoc Terrace at discount for departmental training and park development, saying the uses do not qualify. Meanwhile an Army Reserve land transfer is awaiting action by the Sixth Army for armory use.
Five days of mild weather followed timely rains that brought up to an inch of moisture last Thursday and Friday. The high stayed around 61 to 63 degrees while the coldest reading dropped to 41 degrees.
Lompoc's Municipal library to be closed on Sundays as announced by the Library Board. The decision cites a personnel shortage and low Sunday use, ending the seven day schedule that started during World War II due to gas rationing and Camp Cooke activations.
Lompoc Shriners will host Potentate C. Stanley Chapman and his 35-member divan at a Saturday breakfast in the Valley Club. Entertainment includes the Chanter of Al Malaikah Temple. In the evening Lompoc Natives join Shriners and Masons from San Luis Obispo and north Santa Barbara for a free family show at San Luis Obispo High School with Hollywood entertainers starting at 8 p.m. About 100 Lompocans are expected to attend.
Two Lompoc residents were hospitalized Tuesday morning after an automobile collision at the intersection of Central and DeWolffe avenues. The injured are Margaret De Soto, 43, and passenger Martha Garcia, 48. Their injuries are not described as major, but they are expected to recover. INJURED, See Page 2
