LA county workers vote on strike over pay offers

About 3,000 county employees voted to strike if no deal by Monday morning as AFL-CIO sanctioned a broader walkout by 60,000 of the county’s 79,000 workers. Talks continue though unions seek 8–10 percent raises while the county offers about 5.5 percent.

Israelis marked the 26th independence anniversary with muted ceremonies as clashes continued on Mt Hermon and the Golan Heights. A Damascus communique reported heavy fighting overnight while a Tel Aviv spokesman denied some reports. Prime Minister Golda Meir voiced deep shock and hope for future peace. California Lt Gov Reinecke cited on San Diego convention plan

Watergate prosecutors say Ed Reinecke discussed holding the 1972 Republican Convention in San Diego with Haldeman before the date he testifed. They argue against dismissing a three count perjury case and say Reinecke exaggerates lack of evidence. The indictments relate to his 1972 Senate Judiciary testimony on ITT funds for the convention and a 1971 party claim that the San Diego idea was hatched.

UN censures Israel for Lebanon raid

Airmen face murder charges in Ogden holdup killings

Two Hill Air Force Base mechanics, Dale S. Pierre and William A. Andrews, were charged with three counts of first degree murder after five people were tortured and shot during a robbery at a stereo shop. Victims included Sherry Ansley, 18, and Stanley Walker, 20, with one survivor in a coma and another recovering after ear surgery to remove a ball point pen.
