Younger seeks initiative for mandatory sentences in California

Attorney General Evelle Younger launches an initiative to require mandatory prison terms for serious felonies. He argues voters should overturn the Assembly Criminal Justice Committee decision that stalled the measure. Oroville Police Chief Wesley Barrett will co chair the campaign. South African Vote Seen Boosting Vorster Party

White voters in South Africa went to the polls to likely widen Prime Minister John Vorster's National party majority as he seeks a new mandate after eight years guiding apartheid policy. Polls predicted low turnout among about 2.2 million white voters in the fifth NP victory since 1948.

Alioto vows to continue Zebra search and tactics

San Francisco Mayor Joseph Alioto defends continued stop and question tactics in the Zebra killings hunt. IRS projects $25 million in 1976 campaign funds via tax checkoff

IRS Commissioner Donald C. Alexander said more than $25 million will be designated this year for the 1976 presidential campaign through the $1 checkoff on income tax returns, with a potential balance over $29 million by year end. He noted the fund could begin operating in 1976 once a 15 cent per voting-age citizen threshold is reached, and credited stronger disclosure coverage for improved compliance.

California liquor tax bill failing in committee fight

A Senate Governmental Organization subcommittee voted 5-0 to kill a liquor tax and fair trade repeal bill after a San Francisco psychiatrist charged lawmakers with accepting special favors from the liquor industry. Gov Reagan and Speaker Moretti opposed the measure.
