370 hospital employees may have to go
A doctors committee recommends closing vital Santa Barbara General Hospital facilities due to changing trends and unemployment gaps for the county’s 2600 plus workers. Hospital Administrator John Quinn said most of the 370 staff would likely lose their jobs if the plan is enacted. The County Employees Assn pressed for unemployment insurance while Administrative Officer Raymond D. Johnson said such a program is unnecessary so far. Stringer, association general manager, said the situation concerns many members as layoffs have been rare.

Supreme Court weighs desegregation transfer in Richmond case
The court heard arguments that white students moved from Richmond to neighboring Henrico and Chesterfield Counties to dodge desegregation. The case centers on Judge Merhige’s 1972 order to merge city and county boards to end racial isolation, now on appeal after the 4th Circuit voided it. The NAACP Defense Fund argues district lines hinder desegregation.
