AFL-CIO urges immediate minimum wage raise to $2 an hour

AFL-CIO legislative director Andrew Biemiller told Congress the minimum wage should jump from 1.60 to 2.00 per hour immediately, rejecting January timetables. Unions with over two million members urged $2.50 as a counterproposal, arguing current pay cannot keep up with living costs.

Southern senators seek amendments to soften desegregation bill

In Washington UPI report Southern senators push changes to an emergency school aid bill backed by the Nixon administration. Sen. Sam J. Ervin Jr proposes distributing 1.5 billion dollars to states by student population instead of for specific desegregation uses. Other amendments target busing, school choice, neighborhood schools, and funding for parochial school activities. Sen. John Stennis would extend desegregation efforts to the North.

China shifts stance as fear of Soviet Union drives outreach

Officials view Beijing’s overtures to the United States as shaped by concerns over the Soviet threat in Siberia and Central Asia, plus anxiety over Japan’s growth. California voters reject school tax measures amid talk of fiscal chaos

State schools chief Wilson Riles warns that continued voter rejection of local school tax overrides could plunge districts into chaos unless state funded reform passes. He cites Sacramento approving an 88 cent override, Clovis approving a 5 million building bond and a 6.2 million state aid package, while many districts reject measures. The proposed fix would raise state aid by 400 million and levy a 3.75 per 100 property tax. Legislative sponsors include Sen. Albert Rodda and Assemblyman Leroy Greene. Martha Mitchell calls for abolition of the Supreme Court over busing ruling.
