Lom poc city council voted to release 15 000 of the withheld LEDA funds after a luncheon briefing. LEDA sought renewed support of 20 000 for 1977 78 while some members urged matching private funds and tighter oversight amid a shrinking membership and ongoing development hurdles.

Supreme Court Allows Public School Paddling

The Supreme Court ruled 5 to 4 that teachers may paddled unruly students without prior notice and without a hearing, upholding corporal punishment in public schools. Justices White Brennan Marshall and Stevens dissented in part, urging procedural protections. The decision coincided with a separate case upholding Philadelphia’s single sex high school system.

Suspect escapes hospital after forgery and theft charges

Terry Wayne Harrison, 33, wanted for grand theft and forgery in Lonpoc, escaped from Santa Barbara County General Hospital while still in leg irons. An all points bulletin was issued. He used another man’s ID to gain admission to hospitals nationwide to obtain narcotics and left unpaid bills totaling over 8000 dollars. He had been arrested in Lompoc and remanded to custody after admitting to multiple hospital visits using false IDs.
