Unusual kites win across two age groups at local contest

Sixty four entrants? No, twenty kite-flyers among 54 entrants earned awards at Beattie Park in Lompoc. Scott Dean eight, Marvin Sands seven, and Kimberly Brandon eight top the 6 to 11 group for highest flying kites. In the older group Oscar Sanchez fourteen and Steve Braun fourteen won in their category along with prizes for longest tails and most artistic kites.

Weekend crashes claim man and injure five youths

A Los Angeles man, Wayne Everett Wack, 31, was killed when struck on Highway 101 near Highway 246 by Richard Edwin Broge, 46. In a separate crash on Highway 246 five Lompoc youths were injured, driver Andrew William Scott, 17, suffering major injuries. others included John Bickmore, 13, Robert Bickmore, 15, William Bishop, 15, and Robert Wombacher, 16. Police said rocks damaged three local shops, Dan's Cycle and Sport Center, Motorcycle City, and the B and J Grocery, with total damage about 1,300 dollars.
