President Nixon requests Congress authorize selling 16 major commodities worth 4.1 billion from the national strategic stockpile to curb inflation. He cites 6.7 billion total value with half in seven items and argues disposals could stabilize prices for consumers.
Voters face a 10 name field for two seats in the Lompoc Unified School District with turnout forecast at 40 to 45 percent of 12 872 registered voters. Polls run 7 am to 8 pm across ten sites including nine schools and the County Building.
United Press International reports killer tornadoes swept Texas from Pearsall to Plainview and Rockport, killing at least eight and injuring 19. A tornado trapped drivers on Interstate 35 near Pearsall, destroying cars and a half mile of highway. a child and a news photographer died in Plainview. an oil worker died in Rockport. 13 airplanes were lost at Frio County Airport.
William T. Farr Los Angeles Times reporter jailed for 46 days for refusing to reveal sources told a Cal Poly audience he is not optimistic about his future but will keep his promise. He cited court stays and appeals while warning a denial could force his return to confinement for civil contempt.
President Nixon told about 4 000 construction workers that slashing defense spending would sap U S negotiating power for nuclear arms reductions with Warsaw Pact rivals. He urged backing a strong defense budget to secure any future agreement and recalled worker support over Vietnam.
Al Gomhouriya accuses the United States of collaborating in sabotage of oil tanks in South Lebanon to fuel friction with Saudi and Lebanese authorities. It claims new US plans aim to crush guerrillas as most Arabs stay quiet and cites prior Israel arms support and a Beirut raid.
A line of heavy thunderstorms drenched Mississippi with flash flooding in Jackson and nearby areas. Despite new rain, backwater flooding north of Vicksburg remained a risk, with hundreds evacuated over three weeks. An emergency crew of 100 convicts fortified a levee near Vicksburg protecting about 500 homes, while estimates of homes damaged around Eagle Lake dropped to 20 to 25. Farther downriver, Yazoo River waters and a damaged dam led Army engineers to open the Morganza floodway, the first use since 1954.
