Withdrawal of claim of new Soviet troops in Czechoslovakia

CTK released and quickly retracted a report that new Soviet occupation troops would reinforce Czechoslovakia. The brief notice said the claim was unfounded due to changed facts. No count of troops or further explanation followed amid heightened Soviet censorship and anti-Soviet riots.

Five Children Die in Houston Fire Tragedy

In a Houston ghetto area an early morning blaze claimed five young lives from two families. An 11 year old girl escaped. ages of the victims ranged from 4 to 9. Parents were not at home when the fire started. A neighbor alerted the fire department.

Israel Jordan clash spans over three hours near Sea of Galilee

Israeli and Jordanian troops fought for about three hours in the Al Manshiyah area eight miles south of the Sea of Galilee with tanks and machine guns, while Egypt claimed its artillery targeted senior Israeli officers nearby. No Israeli casualties were reported, eight Israeli soldiers were seen evacuated, and Egyptian artillery allegedly injured Israeli officers in a separate crossing near the Suez Canal.

Floods force thousands from homes across upper Midwest

The governors requested federal disaster declarations as spring floods chased about 8,000 people from their homes and threatened many more. Evacuations stretched through North Dakota, Minnesota, South Dakota, Iowa, and Wisconsin with major flooding reported along the James and Pipestem rivers and in Jamestown.

UC custodian critically injured in UC Santa Barbara bombing

Dover O. Sharp, 55, a UC custodian, sustained burns over 70 percent of his body and multiple injuries when a time bomb exploded Friday at the faculty club on the UCSB campus. The blast caused extensive damage, shattered glass, and prompted campus and police investigations as officials called for calm.

Soviet Union proposes talks with China on border dispute

The Soviet Foreign Ministry offered to begin negotiations in Moscow or another convenient date to resolve the border clashes around Damansky Island on the Ussuri frontier. Nixon aims to outline funding needs for 1970 plan

President Nixon plans to disclose in broad terms the funds required to operate the government fight inflation and sustain the Vietnam War. White House aides are drafting legislation to close tax loopholes and curb heavy payments. Early reports suggest the 1970 spending plan could cut as much as 2 billion from Lyndon Johnson's earlier $195.3 billion proposal aiming for a $3.4 billion surplus.

104 AFLC detachment cuts affect Vandenberg jobs

About 104 Air Force Logistics Command employees at Vandenberg Air Force Base face job changes by July 1 when Detachment 41 is deactivated and a smaller Detachment 41 formed under the Ogden area. Some transfers to McClellan and other Vandenberg positions are offered with RIF rights based on seniority and qualifications.

Saigon reports the seventh week of the nationwide offensive with 30 barrages into South Vietnamese towns and allied camps.
