U S District Court in San Diego considers a petition by school districts including five in Santa Barbara County for a permanent injunction to stop the state from withholding millions annually from federally impacted areas.
The mobile x ray unit will operate in the Veterans Memorial Building southeast lot on Monday with two sessions from 11 am to 2 pm and 3 pm to 6 pm. Anyone 15 or older may receive a free chest x ray. Deputy County Counsel Robert Curiel noted Lompoc Unified has the most at stake in the court fight, with about $506000 at issue for 1968 69, while other districts are involved.

County Tax Collector J Newton Blanchard warns taxpayers of the April 10 deadline to avoid penalties. By now $38.5 million has been collected, about 65 percent of the $58 million levy, with late returns incurring a 6 percent penalty if postmarked after April 10.
Deputy County Clerk Ann Sweet announced residents not yet registered must complete registration by midnight tomorrow. A registration booth will operate in front of Thrifty Drugstore from 3 to 7 p.m. and the County Clerk's office on South D Street will accept registrations until 7 p.m. tomorrow, with optional midnight deadline if a registrar is found.
