Free tutoring expands at Allan Hancock College

A year ago a campus lobby table started a free 1 to 1 tutoring service in the Allan Hancock College Library. By last fall about 15 percent of students were served by roughly 80 peer tutors, with evening division students also gaining on the program.

Property evaluation drop due to conservation acts

County officials report an approximate 8 million loss in assessed valuation for 1973-74 due to water moratoriums and Proposition 20. The drop could mean about 124000 in property tax revenue, roughly two cents on the county tax levy, with Goleta Valley and Montecito most affected. Some construction trends may offset the impact in other areas.

Lompoc mayor election debate spurs July study session

City council considers methods for selecting a mayor from among members with eight-year history. Benton urges public study session in July. The panel delayed sewage standards deadline to 1977 and granted a one-month delay for discharge permit review set for April 19. The council seeks a mineral source control ordinance due April 16 and moves mayoral elections from April to March.

State agencies oppose Zaca Lake camp area plan

State officials from Fish and Game Parks and Recreation Health and Forestry voiced concerns over the Howard Olsen Associates 320 unit expansion at Zaca Lake in Santa Ynez Valley. They cited potential lake drawdown, wildfire risk water and sewage issues and uncertain water supply ahead of a public hearing in Santa Barbara.

Lompoc Council Considers Zoning Shifts and Open Areas

Planning Commissioner Vern Copeland argues the ordinance is a valuable tool while downsizing city zones. The council mostly conforming 18 of 20 parcels to the land use plan, with two 10 acre parcels removed from rezoning due to flood and airport flight-path concerns. Terrill Cox for William Culberson urged planned commercial zoning for parts of his annexed property, but the council deferred action. The Elks Lodge property rezoning aims to permit a club facility after a conditional use permit.
