Guerrillas offer to release five Western hostages
Ethiopian guerrillas say they will release five captured North Americans if the government avoids retaliation. The five are two Canadians and three Americans from Tenneco Oil, held since a helicopter was downed near Massawa. Authorities report the captives are in good health and have been moved periodically.

Mariner 10 patrols the Mercury system in pursuit of Charley the suspected moon of Mercury. Dr. A Lyle Broadfoot of Kitt Peak originally reported a strong ultraviolet signal separated from Mercury indicating a moving source.

New York Transit Workers Reach Settlement to Avert Strike
The Transit Workers Union and Transit Authority announced a new two year contract hours before expiration averting a citywide shutdown. The agreement includes a 6 percent raise now an additional 3 percent December 1 and 5 percent April 1 1975 plus cost of living adjustments a higher meal allowance and extended productivity and health benefits.
