Shale Gas In Eastern States Seen As Long Term Supply

Foundation Work Begins on Hocking County Senior Center

Work progresses on the new Hocking County Senior Citizens Center at Front and Spring Streets. A Henry Bros. Masonry employee begins laying concrete block walls while a backhoe digs footers and brick facade erection is planned. Supreme Court agrees to hear Ohio death penalty challenge

The Supreme Court will review Ohio death penalty laws in the Willie Lee Bell case. Bell, condemned to die for the 1974 Cincinnati murder, argues the method of applying the death penalty is cruel and unusual. Co defendants include Samuel Hall, who admitted he fired the fatal shot.

Hocking Areas Draw Big Weekend Crowds and Few Incidents

Hocking County outdoor spots reported good to heavy crowds over the weekend. Lake Logan State Park saw a packed beach and thousands of visitors while Hocking Hills filled campgrounds and cabins. State buys land to form Rock Bridge Preserve

Ohio Department of Natural Resources purchases 45.5 acres around the Natural Rock Bridge near the Hocking River. The $50,600 deal, paid to Zora Crawford who owned the land 45 years, followed an earlier 3 acre purchase. The site, once for scientific study, will gain hiking trails and a parking area for limited public use.

Three Charges After High Speed Cruiser Chase Crash

Police filed three counts against 19 year old Dale E. Waddell for reckless driving fleeing police and motorist endorsement violation after a high speed pursuit ended with a police cruiser wreck in the early Saturday incident. Officer Harold Fickel reported the cruiser was destroyed when the power steering failed during the chase.

Fire at Maury County Jail Leaves 42 Dead

A 16 year old inmate started a foam padded cell fire at Maury County Jail in Columbia Tennessee killing 42 people including 34 inmates and six visitors. Deputy struggled to retrieve jail keys delaying rescues as victims were evacuated by helicopter to Nashville hospitals.

Rainfall in the Hocking Valley over the weekend totaled six tenths of an inch. A 60 percent chance of more rain is expected tonight and Tuesday with highs in the 80s and lows in the 60s. It was 85 muggy degrees under overcast skies at 11 a.m. today after an early low of 55.
