Shaw Named Hocking County Road Superintendent
County Road Superintendent Bill Shaw of Pleasant Valley Road will take over the post effective Monday, announced by Hocking County Engineer Larry Gerstner. Shaw, a Logan High School and Ohio State University graduate, has been with Burgess Niple Ltd. in Columbus. he is the son of Otto A. Shaw of Rockbridge. Terry Smith, former assistant under George Mara, remains with the department as assistant road superintendent.

James Earl Ray serving 99 years for the King assassination led a bold escape from Brushy Mountain State Prison. Five other inmates fled with him after scaling a 10 foot wall beneath a 2300 volt line. A seventh fugitive was wounded by a rifle and recaptured. The manhunt expanded with FBI and state agents, helicopters, and roadblocks across East Tennessee as officials vowed to recapture all escapees.
